The Curious Tale of Kitty White
Born in Japan in 1974, Hello Kitty is the product of the imagination of Ikuko Shimizu, a young designer asked to add to the ever-growing collection of characters created for the company Sanrio. Originally, Hello Kitty was designed to adorn a small coin purse designed by the company.
The specific cartoon character had to appeal to the “preteen girl in everyone.” That was the requirement.
Over the years Hello Kitty has become a phenomenon, and one that has spread around the world. Hello Kitty was born standing 5 apples high, weighing the same as 3 apples, and attending third grade. This year Hello Kitty, who’s true name is Kitty White, will turn 37 years old but will be forever immortalized as a fun-loving kitten who, surprisingly, lives in the suburbs of London, England with her family (in her own pretend world).
